If you dont want to group you shouldnt have to get into a 6-person group to finish the storyline. As well as lessening the difficulty on some of the harder quests, rewards across the board are being increased -- both in experience gains and Runescape Gold rewards. Expansion or not, Assault on Balaurea looks to include some very large-scale encounters.
The pets, by the way, are functional. Theyre not combat pets, though one of the functions of them is to alert you of danger. They are also capable of storing items (like a bank or warehouse) and even producing common crafting resources and materials.
