There are ten races and nine classes available so you have many choices to decide your character when launching in this world. However, the game most important choice when you create your character is which faction you wish to fight for much knight gold. You can join the Horde or the Alliance, and your choice here determines much of what you can and cannot accomplish in the world.
You can only group and talk to players in your own faction and you also can only view and befriend players in your faction when using the in-game social commands. This is to make you feel like a member of one enormous team, while at the same time setting up the other faction as an enemy or, at best, a rival.
